78'' Extra

I like pitch authority. The 70 lacks it. It however tracks very well and has great roll and rudder authority. I tend to fly it more like a pattern plane. It hovers very very well and is very graceful. Also the scheme rocks.

I am going to attempt to do a theme scheme at some point.

Got the pipe installed!!! Haven't got any numbers on it yet, i have to wait to borrow my friends tach. It runs nicely with a Vess 20B though :) I haven't changed the settings on the needles yet from when i was running the stock muffler. By the way if you notice the engine started forward on the first flip

I'm really excited to tune the needles a bit and fly it!

Hope you don't mind my little crack about the elevator. When you do those high energy snaps I imagine myself in the cockpit and just feel "ouch"! Fun to watch! I liked that 70 but as we discussed if you have a 60" for practice and convenience and a 78 for performance and competing where would the 70 fit? Someone without the other two would love to have the 70 in the hangar for sure.

Got to fly my new setup today finally. It's GREAT! I really like the way it flew on the pipe. When i idle it was so quite i thought the engine quit on me a few times. I didn't get to do too much 3d since the winds were 20+ MPH but i have unlimited vertical and can do snaps on the way up and keep going. The power is a VERY nice match for this plane.

I didn't get to tach it yet since my buddy who has the tach didn't come to the field today. Actually it was soo windy i was literally the only one there. I can't wait to fly it on a calmer day. I'll make sure to get some video when i get a chance.

I was nervous the pipe would make me tail heavy but i also added a spinner and i'm sure the Vess 20B weighs more than the Xoar 19x8. I ended up slightly more nose heavy after everything was added.

Also, i thought i should mention that the OS is starting forward every time and even with the throttle at idle. First start of the day i flip it 3 times with the choke on the 2 with it off and it starts right up. After that it took only 1 flip to get it started for the rest of the day. Very happy with it!

Great update, and great news! Can't wait to see the video of it flying once you get it!

Thanks Hone! Excellent reporting. Plans post details on header and pipe as well as lengths if you could. Sounds like you set it up perfectly. If DA doesn't come thru this month I'm going to go OS.

I ended up at 27'' from the center of the header flange to the first baffle in the pipe. I'll take some more pics of the setup soon.

I'm very happy with the setup though, it turned out great for my first tuned pipe. I got 6 flights today and everything held up great.

5 flights today, decided to give the SFGs a try again and i really like them. KE loops are ridiculously tight with them on. I also lowered the expo on high rates for all surfaces. I went from around 55% down to 45% on everything. I like it much more, but of course expo is very personal. It was blowing about 15MPH so no one was at the field but me so no footage again. Tomorrow morning i should be able to get something filmed, hopefully it's nice out.
I'm loving the setup i have right now a lot, it's definitely the best setup for this plane i've flown so far(EME 35 and OS on stock muffler).

Well, DA is having issues with the 35 ignition according to several sources. So, decision time. I like the OS but can't get my brain off the backward starting. There is a local guy with a 78 on a piped DLE 35RA turning 20-21" props so I'm going for it. Will report. Hope to have it all together with new vinyl by the end of the month.
Hone, you've been and continue to inspire me with the setup. Thanks.
