78'' Extra

I will let Darren tell the story, but the 78 is now running well and looked good. It needs the pipe to have the power level I like.

Mine started out pretty weak and gained a ton after break in. I'm guessing at least 20% after a bunch of run time. The pipe is still a great idea though... You guys are throwing around a larger bird than me.

Shameless plug!

Ok, it's really late and I'm beat but beat from a great day of RC flying. Went to our "farm" grass field at about 0800 to meet Matt (Enterprise), fly electric till our limit of 0900 for gas. Needed to run the new engine and hopefully if all went well maiden the 78. Killed time til 0915 and got it started without too much difficulty. Ran it, tuned it just a bit, set throttle curve. Time to fly! Takeoff no biggy, minor trim and I started doing Cuban 8s, high power, idle cycles. Went great for 10 minutes then at about one mistake too few altitude- no throttle response at idle! :veryshocked:
I turned away from field thinking I had enough altitude for a 270 to base- over estimated glide ratio of the extra. Lost sight behind a tree and in front of a line of tall pines (I was below the tops and headed for tall grass to cushion the blow). I started yelling "help", "help me" like a little girl (no offense Ashleigh!). I wasn't specific enough and Matt and Gary thought I needed help flying. I needed eyes cause I lost sight of the plane! It popped out into sight still airborne and I couldn't make the grass. Had to fly it into some low trees and brush and the foliage cushioned the fall. :cursing:
"Expletives" and a walk. Matt and I found it nose first into the grass. NO DAMAGE whatsoever!:grrreat: Thank you Extreme Flight (again!) for making a very tough airframe.
Throttle servo- DOA:thumbsdown:
Matt let me experience the camaraderie that is often seen at fly in's like last weekend. He took a servo out of one of his planes and let me have it so I could get the satisfaction of a maiden with landing! Thanks a million Matt, I owe you.
The rest is in the smiles in the pics above. Flew for another flight, had something to do for dear wife (for which I was late and somehow she didn't understand that a plane in a tree and the necessity to maiden with a landing was more pressing than meeting an exterminator- Huh!). Author's note- I did say I would be there and I WAS WRONG! sorry dear. But I got my landing
Later in the evening I went to one of Cody's club fields for a few more flights and to let him check my setup. It passed! So, 5 flights, 4 landings!:ashamed: and a great running first gasser. A little preparation, a lot of luck, some great support and encouragement (thanks Gary, Gary, Cody, Ted, John and all you guys too of course!). All in all a great day.
I'll put some notes on the DLE 35 thread regarding the start and run in so far.
More flying this weekend at a big tri- club fly in at a local airport in MA:banana:

Quick tech notes- DLE 35, stock muffler for break in
Xoar 20x6 Laminated
initial max RPM- 7400
5 flights max- 7600-7700
Required minor adjustments from recommended settings and ran smooth and reliably all day (if you don't count a failed throttle servo- no fault of the engine).
Starting- initial using manufacturer's technique- choke with full throttle til pop, choke off and throttle just above idle worked OK with some minor adjustment to throttle settings. We started using more like 1/2 throttle and it was fine. Initial full throttle is to pull the fuel into the lines and wet the reeds. Hot starts still required a quick 2-3 flip choke but worked fine. Very pleased with engine.

I see what you mean even after a few flights, steady increase in max rpm with each flight it seems. What did you use for oil? I'm using Penzoil air cooled at 32:1

Did the additional expo help the pitch sensitivity?

Yes. I also lowered the low rate after Cody flew it. He really likes that airframe, I could tell by his face when he flew it. What's not to like, right!

How long did you figure beak in took. Also open question for anyone- when is a break in done? What engine indications do you look for?

When you get bored (or deaf) with the stock muffler! With the Bowman ring I would think with a couple of gallons through it should be ready for the pipe.

That's what I'm talkin about! More power- Ar Ar Ar as Tim the tool man says!
