The 'What did you do in your workshop tonight?' thread

The old system was a Bryant and that's what I went with again. The main reason for that was the air handler is in a closet in the basement with limited room and the new Bryant was very similar in size and the other choices were larger.

I think it's been like 120,000 years since we've had one of those.

They say the life expectancy of a heat pump is 10 to 15 years depending on who you talk to. The first one lasted 19 years and the second lasted 16 years. The electric heat/air handler section is 35 years old so we tend to get our use out of things. They were there a 8 this morning to start on...

All I did tonight was move airplanes around so the heating and cooling company will have room to change our AC system tomorrow. I got that call on the way back from the flying field Sunday. 90 something humid day at the field and come home to no AC. That will make your day let me tell you. And...

Here's a drone shot from someone Saturday. A lot of them camped Saturday night as well so we had a good time Sunday too. I think Ryan must have had a REALLY good time Saturday night because when I left around 2 in the afternoon Sunday he still hadn't shown up to get his airplanes or EZ-Up.

Our club had our Big Bird event today. Unfortunately I had work to do, but I did manage to spend a pile of money there. A club member donated an old Byron P-51 with the belt drive 4 blade prop system to the club to be auctioned off. The club president was kind enough to bid on it for me and I...

    Scale 35% Krill Extra 330SC....CUSTOM-ARF!!!

Small cut throughs are usually not a problem and don't require repriming. Just make sure the color stays uniform over them so it all looks covered. You can put a coat of base on everything then hit the cut throughs separately so they're covered then coat the whole thing as needed.

Parts are just ridiculous now days. I did a Toyota Tacoma a few months ago that the front bumper was torn off of. There was no damage to the fenders or hood, but yet the bill was near $7500. The headlights were $1000 a piece and the grille parts were just as bad.

My most ridiculous thing so far this week is a grille emblem for a Toyota Rav4. There are two different types, one costs $57 and the other $422. One guess which one is on the job I'm working on.:face-palm: Looks like a $422 dollar emblem doesn't it?

Keeping the color as thin as possible helps. You can also mask each one separately so there is no other colors under the stripe your painting, but I've seen that backfire if the masking isn't just perfect. It also adds a lot of masking. For example I painted it all white first then added each...

After sanding the primer I sprayed the whole fuselage, hatch and cowl white so Tony could lay out the stripes. When I got it back from Tony I took it back to the shop over the 4th of July to start painting. I about gave Tony a heart attack with the cost of the colors. The price of the green...

Here are some pictures to catch up to where I am now. After building a rack out of the junkiest wood I could find ;) I hauled it to the shop and sprayed some epoxy primer, then after the primer dried I filled any pinholes and such with Dolphin Glaze then sanded that and reprimed those areas.

I’m going out flying thread 2019

I got out to the field today. It turned out to be ridiculously windy, but I still got a flight in. It was one of those days when it took two people to put the wings in the wing bag to keep everything from blowing away.

The powder is available from a lot of companies. Just do a search for powdered or dry guide coat.

I built an extremely crude cradle to hold the fuselage of the Ultimate so I can transport it back and forth to my body shop for painting. The plywood is some nasty old scraps form our old shop sign. ;)

Guide coat can either be a powder or paint. You apply it over your primer so when you sand it shows you your low spots or flaws in your bodywork . Most people just use a black spray can of paint and very lightly mist a coat on, let that dry, then sand it. I prefer a powdered guide coat, I think...

I thought I was going to take the Ultimate fuselage to work today and prime it. My truck was at work so I thought I would put it in my car with the seats folded down but failed miserably. So, tomorrow I'm going to build a cradle so I can haul it in my truck.
