Cost comparison, budget 60cc versus top shelf 30cc

My idea behind this thread which is that I assume a fixed amount of money is available. The components I speced out are from places that have decent US support, no HK stuff other than servo arms or other things you would not send in for service. I ordered a couple of budget servos to test. I...

Did you just use testor's paint for the horns?

Some supply guidance on starting into balsa plane(s)

When building my RV-4 kit I used wood glue when I could. I think I managed to avoid using epoxy, but I have slept since then. I use the gorilla glue brand wood glue. One of my builder buddies recommended it.

    74" Edge 540

I did my 92 this morning. Put some epoxy in a mixing cup and dilluted it 2:1 with alcohol. Then I brushed it on with a epoxy brush. Only took 10 minutes. I have not baffled any of my motors yet, but after having to sent my DA-120 back last season I think I am going to do it to my 104 at least...

I never can get the planes to 3D well. Which models do you try to tweak?

    72" Extra 330SC

I had a 4325-310 on 8S when I had one of these. I was using 19" props. I would assume that wind and bigger motor means you can use 20" props, which is better for 3D. With a lower wind you can always prop up to get speed.

    74" Edge 540

I have used both denatured alcohol diluted epoxy and Krylon clear to do fuel proofing. It is not my favorite step to be honest. I did have a fuel leak in my Ultrastick 40 that got my 10cc Evolution. It dissolved the epoxy on the firewall and it came completely loose. Luckily it was held in...

    Spektrum DX18

Seems to me they have taken almost all of the QQ features and put them into the 18. The only things I have now different are the .5% mixes and some different airplane graphics for some models.

    Spektrum DX18

DX-18 update came out today and they fixed the issue from the post above. Now I can do a switch to MOT mix so I can do a idle down! 250 model memory now just like the DX9 and it is super easy to arrange the models. They added a sub menu for managing your model memories. Only bad thing is I...

    Toledo Expo 2014

ETOC goes on at the same time, but I have never made it to that. I always airline in and out the same day. Looks like a lot of exciting stuff at this years show. It is the next event on my RC calendar. I will be posting some content from the show for the site.

I know her flight school does not have anything aerobatic. Next time I talk to her I will see what contacts she has in the area. I know there are some warbirds on the field that she knows the owners of as my dad got a T-6 Texan ride. To my unnaclimated stomach, a super decathalon is just as...

Since I am in building mode at the moment here are some of the tools I used a lot today and yesterday. Hot Knife for removing covering. Get them cheap at the female hobby stores. They are soldering irons with a exacto blade. Got this tip from one of the AJ videos. Vice grips. You need these...

    3dhs 92" edge 540 !!!

After it dries I cut off the excess with a Exacto. Flying off grass is real hard on the wheel pants. On my EF 78 I just went without them.

    3dhs 92" edge 540 !!!

When I do up a new ARF, I like to reinforce the wheel pants as this is a high wear item. I cut out a few pieces of fiber cloth. Then I embed them with resin. Then I lay the pieces on the insides of the pant along the edges of the wheel cut out as this where most of the cracking occurs.

    New Here? Introduce yourself!

I looked at some of those different brands looking for a 20cc airframe. They are tough to find. I wonder if the Seagull control surfaces will be large enough to get true 3D performance. I have a Seagull Seafury with a Saito 125. The quality is pretty decent for the money.

    3dhs 92" edge 540 !!!

The setup weights the same as the DA-60/RE2. Same as the VVRC 40 and the DLE-35 on a pipe. Another example is the EF 91 extra which is a pretty tail heavy build. People have had no issues with balance putting a DA-85 on those. What a rocket ship that would be.

Sorry, I should have posted twice. I was referring to Mike's comment on learning to fly as he lives in Oregon. My sister was training to compete for IAC in high school in a Christen Eagle. She has not really done a whole lot since she had kids. She wants to build a Pitts Model 12 someday.

ghoffman and I mocked up the DA-70 on it today. It will fit inside the cowl just barely. I might have to make a small modification to allow some room for the plug cap with a cowl blind nut. I will get photos once I finish mounting it. Going with a push pull rudder servo to help with CG as...

I currently fly the Embraer 190. When I was 17 I wanted to join the Navy like my dad and grandfather, but I did not have 20/20 vision and that was game over. There is a color blind waiver if you can differentiate the color light signals from the tower. The controller will have to get his/her...
