The I'm going out flying thread 2016

Yeah 50oz is a bit much to hand crank. The only pumps I have any experience with are Jersey Modeler and the Miracle pump. So far my Miracle pump has been awesome, but I think the Jersey Modeler pumps faster.

The I'm going out flying thread 2016

I went flying today. The weather was good for this time of year, less than 90.;) My flying buddy Tony had a dead stick and dinged up is 35% Composite ARF Extra 330SC a little. He missed making it backed to the field by about 20' and landed in a field of Horseradish. The excitement for the day...

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

Last night I sanded the hatch and the wheel pants. The wheel pants are ready, but the hatch needs a few spots reprimed. This afternoon I installed my aluminum louvers in the pipe hatch. I cut one louver off of each part to make it look like one continuous louver instead of two separate pieces.

The I'm going out flying thread 2016

We've got the best weekend forecast that we've had for a long time. 87 with fairly low winds and reasonable humidity. I'll believe it when I see it. ;)

I went back through some old files and found a front view.

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

That's what started this airplane in the first place.:) I drew an airplane I wanted to do in fiberglass and toned it down to build this one from wood. This was my original design. The idea would be to mold the wing inboard of the gear to the fuse like a Byron Corsair, and attach the gear to...

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

I've been thinking that I mentioned the flashlight trick for finding pinholes in last night's post, but if someone doesn't follow the glassing and painting thread they wouldn't know what I'm talking about. So, here is a copy of that post. Just thought I'd share a little helpful tip. Anyone that...

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

I'm not sure the Culp would be my first choice for a fiberglass fuselage. Getting the stringers right in the plug would be a huge challenge. The green Culp, which is my favorite, has a lot more stringers than the other ones. I do love the Culp though.:)

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

I finished getting the fuselage ready to paint tonight, after that I worked on the the hatch and the wheel pants. I've got the wheel pants almost ready, but the hatch had a few pinholes...... YIKES! Looking at it in normal light it looked pretty good, but when I used my flashlight trick there...

Thanks Paul! I'm dying to mold my own fiberglass fuselage. And watching @Larry B 's thread is just making it worse. ;)

    Glassing and Painting techniques

Just thought I'd share a little helpful tip. Anyone that has either glassed an airplane, or painted fiberglass parts has run into the dreaded pinhole. For years now at work I've been using a very simple technique for finding them. Take a bright beam style flashlight and shine it across the...

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

I cut the hole for the pipe stinger in the hatch and opened up the small vent at the rear of the pipe bump. I'm going to cut a lengthwise vent in the pipe bump just above the pipe since it's pretty tight in there. I'm also going to add an aluminum louver to the front. I taped one on last night...

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

The glass cloth would not lay down in the louvers. If I was making a plug, then a mold, and pulling a part from that I would have had a better chance, but even then to get it thin enough to open up as a louver I think you would need to vacuum bag it.

The 'What did you do in your workshop tonight?' thread

I built a fiberglass hatch to cover the tuned pipe exit on my scratch build project. I still need to cut the exit hole and some vents into it.
