    Glassing and Painting techniques

Looking at Terry's photo above made me think of a very important tip. The black plastic filter on the gun on the left is very important. It's the last defense against air line contaminants. And do yourself a favor and buy the DeVilbiss brand filter. You will see orange ones made by Motor Guard...

    Glassing and Painting techniques

Earle, Every painter has his favorite brand an type of gun. There are a lot of good brands out there such as Sata, Iwata, DeVilbiss and others. I like Sata guns, but a hobbyist doesn't really need to spend $600+ on a spray gun. There are a lot of low cost knock offs out there and also lower...

Earle, the what can happen with red spot putty is when your airplane sits out in the sun the uncatalyzed spot putty can start to shrink and you may be able to see the line of the seem you filled. Lacquer based products are never truly dry and seem to keep moving around for years. Especially when...

    Glassing and Painting techniques

I've been using Upol Dolphin glaze for years. There are a lot of good glazes out there. I really depends on what you local supply house carries. Glazes are polyester based light weight fillers that use a cream hardener like body filler. Most of them are pourable so they are fairly thin and work...

    Glassing and Painting techniques

I'm old enough and been in the bodyshop business long enough to NOT so fondly remember when red spot putty "Red Stuff" was about all there was. I am not one of the guys that looks back at the Lacquer days as "The good old days". I was glad to see it go.

    Glassing and Painting techniques

It's been my thought in the past that where the painted parts really seem to tack on the weight, is in the primer stage. My testing so far confirms to me that the glassing itself can be done very lightly. I've been working on several 4" x 8" balsa test panels. My goal was to test fillers and...

    3D 75cc 106" HyperLITE Slick 540 by Fibertech N More

Another build thread, I'm in! GSN is sure getting a lot of build threads. I love it! And for a biplane, what this hobby needs is a 100cc biplane kit that is reasonably easy to assemble at the field.

I will also be testing a couple of different primers to see how they stack up weight wise.

Some control line stunt guys use carbon veil. It's supposed to produce a very light result, but then you have the carbon fiber/radio issues. The fiberglass tissue sounds very interesting.

Terry, I didn't do any that way, but I can. As a matter of fact, I think I'll try a new one with some of the joint compound filling some dings in bare wood first to see how the resin reacts on top.

    3D Viper-ST 100-120cc scratch build......it continues!

Terry and I have been discussing different techniques for glassing and prepping balsa parts for paint. I've started doing some test panels to see how the materials and techniques vary in weight and finish. I made eight 4" x 6" balsa panels and covered them with 1.5 ounce glass cloth and Z-Poxy...

    Your Package Arrived Smashed!!

I used to get monthly software updates sent to me through FedEx. Twice the FedEx guy snapped the disk in half folding the envelope to put it in the mail slot instead of coming in the building. The last straw was when they never delivered it one month at all, and the software company billed me...

    IMAC Delro 2.5M Raven Build

Interesting, I do like the idea of the support on the outside of the pant. I think I'm going to add a support in the wheel pants on my scratch build since the pants are so big for the size of the plane. 13.25" on a 50cc airplane.
