    3D CAP 232-ST design / build / prototype

Terry, What weight cloth do you use for the mold? And for the layup of the cowl itself, what weight and how many layers? Doug

    3D Viper-ST 100-120cc scratch build......it continues!

Terry, I started on some test panels tonight. I didn't have any .56 cloth so I used something a slightly heavier. Since I'll be testing the different methods and fillers the heavier cloth shouldn't hurt. I did spray half of them with hairspray so see if it effects things.

    3D Viper-ST 100-120cc scratch build......it continues!

Terry, the Spies Spray Poly might work for that depending on how you apply it. It could be brushed or sprayed and has about a thirty minute pot life. I need to make some test panels and see what works and what's light and what's not. I think I have some SIG .56 cloth at home and I know I have...

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

That brings me to another issue. How big should the pilot be. Should it be big enough that just the pilots head sticks up in the canopy like a Gee Bee Z so it looks like the pilot is wearing the airplane? Something to think about.

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

The look I was going for is 30's vintage air racer. I tried several different canopy shapes when I was drawing it and didn't care for a laid back style of canopy. Two of my favorite air racers of all time were the Gee Bee Z and the Cosmic Wind. They both use a similar style of canopy. When I...

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

Terry, the only problem with that is that you'll have 6 airplanes done by the time I start glassing this one. ;) I'm planning on using 0.56oz from Thayercraft or something similar and Z-Poxy finishing resin.

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

I did some mock up tonight. The wheel pants are just laying there and the cowl is held on with tape and good intentions, but it's good enough to check out the cowl fit. I think once I space the cowl out a little and do a little surgery on the bottom to fix the lower line it should be fine. The...

    3D CAP 232-ST design / build / prototype

I'm sure it wont. I know your a perfectionist and that you wouldn't be happy with an airplane you designed that didn't fly great. The airplane in the picture I posted would snap off to the right every time you breathed too hard on the elevator at any kind of speed. I tried all kinds of fixes...

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

I considered that earlier, but it would also push the tuned pipe back and cause all sorts of problems there. So, I'll space out the cowl and build a filler to make up the gap. It shouldn't be too difficult.

Sounds like a good plan. I can tell you what can happen if number 4 isn't right. Eventually your airplane winds up looking like this.

IMAC JTEC/ Radiowave 3.1m competition series

At least you live somewhere where you don't have to freeze your tuches off to maiden one this time of year. It was 71 here yesterday and this morning it took me 20 minutes to get the ice off my truck and get it out of my icy driveway. :very_angry: Here in the Midwest you can experience every...

    3D Viper-ST 100-120cc scratch build......it continues!

The noise that thing made about 30 seconds in sounds like one of the turbine roof vents on my shop on a windy day. One of these days....BANG....no more roof vent.;) Sharpened brass tube has a lot of uses. They make a beautifully clean hole in balsa if used correctly. The small ones I sharpen by...

Scale 50cc Scratch Build From My Own Design Revisited

On a build like this there are times when you can sit back and admire your work, like the hatch. But shortly after that you come back to the reality that you've got a lot left to do. One of those things left to do is the cowl. I haven't liked this cowl since I got it, and the more I look at it...
