Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% PA-28 Cherokee Build

Looking at the graphics today and found this photo on Airliners.net. Red scheme just like the light blue. Pretty sure I'm going with missile red trim.

You're obviously going for a very light build. Any idea what it will weigh? And am I correct that you're putting an 85cc in it?

I've discovered a number of discrepancies in the WH plans. Mainly with the fuselage cross section. Especially at the tail but a bit through the entire length of the fuse. Not horribly so unless you're anal about the plane like I am.

The airfoil WH used isn't correct either though it is close. The real one has a bit of undercamber to it at the TE.

At the risk of sounding like a dope, may I ask what the purpose of spraying it down with hair spray would be?

Finished final sanding, started with 220, 320, and finished with 400. A light coat of hair spray was applied after each successive sanding.View attachment 119745View attachment 119746

Hair spray is basically glue so it adds glue to the balsa/ filler base and promotes better adhesion. I like the way it sands as well. It's coming along.

Yes I am putting in a Roto 85 FS in the plane. Can't speak to the discrepancies but the plans are a good starting point and use the plans as reference for your build. To be honest I would not have attempted this build without these plans.
Weight? I hope it as light as possible, will let you know in a month or so, if it flies as good as my 25% RC Guys plane I will be happy.

The hair spray is also an old school trick for controlling the fuzz balsa can develop when sanded. And as Tony said it does so by acting somewhat like a sanding sealer/filler.

Well the prototype WH Cherokee ran right around 30 pounds and flew very scale like on a 50cc engine. So at least at first I'd caution against being too aggresive with that throttle.

For me the first discrepancy was the stab. Like you I want the scale flying stabilator. While digging into that and deciding how I'm going to do it I realized the cross section profile at the tail was off. Here's a couple of pics of that final former in the tail. The bearing blocks for the stab actually bolt to this former.
